History

Established in New Orleans in 1985, NOCCR still maintains the original Canal Street location. Following Hurricane Katrina, the Phase I unit and company headquarters were moved to Knoxville, TN.

NOCCR Knoxville and Volunteer Research Group are headquartered inside East Tennessee’s premier research hospital; ideally located for complex clinical trials.

William B. Smith, MD, FACC, is the Founder, President, and Principal Investigator. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Nephrology, and Cardiology. He has been involved in greater than 1800 clinical trials over the past 35 years. Dr. Smith is a frequent lecturer and author and publishes extensively in clinical and scientific journals.

Richard L. Gibson, MD, is a Principal Investigator and has been with NOCCR for 20 years. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Psychiatry, and Forensic Psychiatry, and MPH in Tropical Medicine.

Nyda Brook, JD, Vice President and General Counsel, has been with NOCCR since 1999. Prior to joining our team, she practiced healthcare law in New Orleans.

Sandra Gibson, RN, MBA, Director of Budgets, has been with NOCCR since 1999. Sandy is certified in Nephrology and Critical Care Nursing as well as clinical research coordination.

Professional Clinical Staff

We have experienced medical staff on duty at the facilities 24/7 including 12 full-time study coordinators, 2 full-time Nurse Practitioners, 20 coordinator assistants, IATA certified lab coordinators, and contract and budget specialists. Our coordinators each have an average of 6 years’ experience in the medical field.
